The Winter Blues

By Lisa Jackson, MA, NCC, LMHC, C-EP

It’s that time of year again…you know…brown naked trees, pale lifeless grass, gray-tinted skies, white-covered mountains, cold temperatures, and less sunshine during the day, …Ah yes, it’s winter! For some people this is a season of joyful excitement; a time to gather with loved ones and celebrate the many holidays of the season; a time to go skiing, or enjoy other winter sports. For others however the winter brings on feelings of darkness, lethargy, hopelessness, and a desire to just “hibernate”.

While most of us, to some degree, seek out warmer spots and more comfort in the winter, some people suffer from more than your average “Winter Blues” this time of year. For some people the symptoms of depression can worsen and become quite distressing; maybe even interfere with the quality of daily life.

There are a number of factors that may contribute to a serious case of the Winter Blues. If you already have symptoms (or a history of symptoms) of depression and/or anxiety; someone in your family has a history of depression; if you increase your consumption of carbohydrates, starches, refined sugars, and alcohol this time of year; you are female; live at a higher elevation (yes Albuquerque counts); you’re between the ages of 20-40; and your lifestyle keeps you fairly isolated (e.g. stay at home parent) you are more likely to have an increase in symptoms of depression during the fall and winter months.

There are lots of possible solutions to improve your Winter Blues; however it is very important to use caution when adding supplements to you rout s/filemanager/js/mcfilemanager.js" type="text/javascript"> ine. Although natural and generally safe, supplements are powerful substances. Do not add any supplements to your diet without first consulting a knowledgeable care provider. Some medical conditions, medications, or severe mental health diagnoses may contribute to an adverse response to supplementation. If you are unable to consult with a knowledgeable provider and are not sure if you should be taking supplements, the best practice is DON’T TAKE THEM.  Instead start with the other suggestions (DISPLAYED TO THE LEFT) for good nutrition and exercise.  These may helps alleviate some of your negative symptoms.  Then, before you know it, spring will come around and all the colors of the trees, sky, and even on the ground, will sing again!

Strategies to help you combat the Winter Blues

According to experts in the field, the following can significantly decrease your symptoms, improve your outlook and just make you feel better.

A few approaches include:

  • light therapy
  • decreasing your intake of starches/carbs/sugars/alcohol
  • getting outside for a brisk walk (yes, I know it’s cold)
  • getting some psychotherapy or appropriate medications (if needed)
  • making an effort to have a daily task (like reading, or cooking, etc…)
  • increased social contact
  • and above all reminding yourself that “this too shall pass.”

In addition to these Winter Blues strategies there are a few other things to add to your arsenal to combat your seasonal funk!

In addition to these Winter Blues strategies there are a few other things to add to your arsenal to combat your seasonal funk!

Consider cutting out caffeine, and eliminating artificial sweeteners altogether. Increase your high tryptophan foods like turkey, beef, pork, dairy, chicken, and eggs; try to get at least 4 oz. of protein per meal, 3 times a day.  A few supplements that are likely to increase your serotonin and wipe out your Blues include: Free From Amino Acids, 5-HTP, L-Tryptophan, St Johns Wort, or SAM-e; if you also have difficulty sleeping Melatonin might be a useful

New Faces at the Wholistic Kinesiology Institute

emEmily Glaser - RN, CWK

Greetings—Over the years of my life I have developed great passion for both culture and health.  The big dream is to in some way merge the two together.  Sometimes you can catch me fantasizing about this kind of future… hmmmm, perhaps a private practice on the beach in some exotic country!

I can remember my 22nd birthday… I was staring out the window of a train, traveling out of Northern Vietnam into the SE of China.  In and out of control over my ecstatic emotions, I contemplated my birthday and life relative to such unusual surroundings.  It was at this time in which I promised myself that I would accept every opportunity that was to come, no matter how outrageous.  You could say that Wholistic Kinesiology, for me, is just this… an incredible opportunity.  The right time, the right place, the right person.

I am privileged to have spent the last year and a half studying and practicing Wholistic Kinesiology.  I believe in a relationship between mind and body, consciousness and health… without one, you can’t have the other.   What excites me most is that with Wholistic Kinesiology the fine tuning of this delicately balanced relationship is completely possible.   With this kind of tool, the intelligence of the body is given a mode for communication.  The more we communicate, the more questions we ask, the more we begin to understand.  It is through this understanding that we are able to access and utilize the innate ability we all have to heal our own bodies.  And if through healing one is able to simultaneously raise the frequency of their consciousness… for an individual person it is life changing, for an entire population--culture bending.

I am also a registered nurse, presently working at UNM Hospital in Neuroscience as well as on the Burn & Wound team.  I like to think of myself as a Wholistic Kinesiologist by day and nurse by night--which actually happens to be quite a combination!  The potential for health and happiness is endless.  Come one, come all.

lisaLisa Jackson - MA, NCC, LMHC, C-EP - Wholisitic Psychotherapist

Lisa Jackson holds a Master’s Degree in Counseling from the University of New Mexico. She is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and recognized as a Nationally Certified Counselor. Lisa is a natural empath, has earned certification in a unique energy-healing program called the “HeartWorks Approach” from the Rocky Mountain Institute of Healing Arts, and is currently earning certification in both Spiritual Counseling (Awakenings Institute) and Wholistic Kinesiology (Wholistic Kinesiology Center & Institute).

Since entering clinical practice in 2005, Lisa has enriched her skills in a variety of settings: community agencies, the public schools, and in a mental health center for people with the most severe mental health diagnoses.  As part of a crisis response team, which required both speed and accuracy in diagnosis, she refined her natural empathic and analytical abilities to identify the problem and chart a course for its treatment. Coupling this experience with her training in alternative health care, energy work, and spiritual/empathic counseling, she has developed a unique approach to the evaluation of client concerns and symptoms. Where the medical model, by itself, cannot address emotional and spiritual realities that contribute to a person’s state of being, Lisa has been successful in uncovering underlying causes and bringing a sense of solace and peace back into the lives of her clients.

Lisa holds office hours at the Wholisitic Kinesiology Center & Institute each Friday from 8am to 3pm. She is currently offering clinical and mental health assessments, individual counseling, spiritual counseling, energy clearing and balancing, crisis counseling, nutritional supplementation, and will be facilitating a group called The Healing Circle (in February) where she will teach clients how to access, clear, and balance their own energy systems. To learn more you can check out her website at  www.healinghearttherapies.com. No matter what your concern, when you work with Lisa, you can always count on being treated with respect, non-judgmental, professional, caring support and guidance.

I believe that it is the birthright of everyone to have great health and vitality.  Wholistic Kinesiology is the key to fulfilling on that commitment.  My family and I have received kinesiology treatments for over 30 years and it has been essential to the prevention of chronic disease and the maintenance of good health.  When I discovered that I could learn this amazing set of skills and be of assistance to others, I made the decision to practice Wholistic Kinesiology.  Besides a BA from Oklahoma State and MA from UNM, I have practiced Re-evaluation Counseling for over 20 years.

For me, core values include maintaining a positive outlook, loving relationships and a commitment to peace and justice in the larger community.  Passions include sailing, enjoying five grandchildren (soon to be six) and training for my first triathlon this Spring.

Founder of Wholistic Kinesiology® Speaks at “Gift of Shift” Conference with Gregg Bradon

“Achieving Biochemical Nirvana through Wholistic Kinesiology. The Effect of our Biology on our Emotions” was the subject of a lecture given on Saturday, Jan. 10 by world-renowned founder of Wholistic Kinesiology®, Dr. J Dunn. One of nearly two dozen other speakers and presenters at the event, Dr. Dunn presented to a large crowd early Saturday morning.  She discussed that through her work with clients including Olympic athletes, movie stars and CEOs of multinational corporations, she empowers people to take charge of their health.  She does this by teaching her easy method of Wholistic Kinesiology where they learn to detect and correct their bodies own imbalances and reach “Biochemical Nirvana.”

“I think we are all searching for Nirvana in one form or another. We all want love, peace, gratitude and balance in our lives. While this is totally a worthwhile goal, there exists much sabotage and many blocks in various forms. There can be emotional, physical and spiritual blocks that keep us from achieving these goals. Just talking about changing our thoughts is very inspiring and helpful, often for many of us it is unrealistic and short-lived.” says Dr. Dunn.

Along with assistance from fellow Wholistic Kinesiology Practitioner Colleen Buchanan, Dr. Dunn also conducted a workshop later that afternoon teaching conference participants how to accurately muscle test for nutrients and foods.

The third annual “Finding the Gift in Shift” conference took place at the Radisson Poco Diablo Resort in the mystical red rocks of Sedona, AZ from Jan. 9-11.  Featured keynote speaker Gregg Braden presented new information from his upcoming book “Fractal Time” where he merges the modern discoveries of nature’s patterns (fractals) with the ancient view of a cyclic universe and what we can expect for the mysterious year 2012, and beyond.  Also speaking were Steven A. Ross, president and CEO of the World Research Foundation, as well as best-selling author Gary Renard.  To learn more about the conference, please visit www.stellarproductionslive.com.

Avoiding the Winter Flu Bug

This year we are seeing a particularly virulent form of a virus/bacteria combo.  It seems to be strep throat, bronchitis and the flu all rolled into one. To protect yourselves it’s good to be prepared.

Building up your immune system is the best thing to do ahead of time.  Some of the things to do include:

Everyday Chinese Astraglus-Herb Technology

Immune Potency Formula-Herb Technology

Bio-Immunozyme-Biotics Research

Starting these as soon as possible will really help build you up and prevent infections from getting started.  In addition, avoiding sweets and carbohydrates will help keep your immune system strong.  Eating sugar immobilizes your immune system by 75-85% for about five hours after consumption.  This is why so many get sick around the holidays. Many people drink lots of orange juice to help-which is actually full of sugar and reduces immune function.

Eating hot spicy foods helps your immune system stay strong. Karta Purkh Singh Khalsa recommends eating chilis, onions and ginger during this season.

If the bugs do manage to slip past your defenses these are the things to have on hand:

Pro-Echinacea-Goldenseal-Progena

Olive Leaf Extract-Biotics Resesarch

Guardian V Attack-Herb Technology

Immune V Attack-Herb Technology

Ultra VirX-Biotics Research

Mushroom Immune Defense-Source Naturals

FluPlus-Heel-Take these one every hour while feeling symptoms

Make sure to rest, take hot baths or far-infrared saunas, and drink lots of water… In addition, chicken soup does have some immune enhancing properties. (See...good old mom really did know!)

Have a healthy, happy winter season.  Spring is on its way soon!
