This week I had a family come to visit from the Midwest. They came to get tested with the WK technique. They were all generally healthy but were interested in getting even healthier. The Mom was an athlete and in great shape but was beginning to experience some fatigue since giving birth to her second child who was now 9 months old. Her father came with them and told me that he had had a stroke about 6 years ago and was on 6 different medications since then. His energy was low but he generally said he felt good.
On examination of three generations I discovered a trait that all three shared. They all had high levels of Homocystiene. Homocystiene is a by product of the breakdown of protein. If it can't be recycled or converted into the sulfer molecule it can build up in the blood stream and increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and Alzheimer's disease.
In addition, the father had high levels of insulin due to the continuous consumption of sugar. He loved to suck on hard candy and was quite unhappy when I told him it was leading him toward another stroke or heart attack. But when I explained that insulin secreted into the blood stream by the pancreas when you consume sugar can lead to the overproduction of Cholesterol, he got it.
I went on to explain that high Homocystiene can run in the family. Some people can't convert Folic acid into 5-Methyl Tetrahydrofolate (activated folic acid) which can cause blood homocystiene levels to rise. Combined with his high insulin levels this made for a ticking time bomb for all the family members who inherited this trait. All three of the family members I tested had this genetic defect. (Called a SNiP-Single Nucletide Polymorphism).
The good news is that these genetic variations can be revealed through muscle testing and can be prevented. In this case giving the active form of folic acid and having all family members stay low on simple carbohydrate consumption will go a long way toward preventing heart disease that had run in the family for generations.
To me that is very exciting stuff!
All the best!
